The harvest season 2012: a difficult summer with a few harvest highlights
(Slideshow of 2012 harvest season)
Many of our orchards were hit hard by the unusually cold winter 2011/12 as well as several frosty nights with temperatures below zero during April and May. Hence most of our harvests turned out to be very small, others had to be canceled altogether (e.g. Morello cherry, Mirabelle plum, Red Williamspear). The strict quality checks we conduct during harvest this season were more important than ever before. Only then we can make sure that the processed fruits are to a very high standard. The apricot and the Williams pear harvests were both small in quantity, but excellent in quality. The first time since 2008 we were able to harvest Muscat grapes from Burgenland (Eastern Austria). Further, we were able to obtain five different varieties of plums from four different regions for detailed test runs. The results from these will help us to determine our future strategy in terms of variety of plum and best growing region. In September there was a particular and outstanding highlight: After two years of absence our wild raspberry had its comeback – with impressive quality and powerful fruit flavors not seen for years!

The summer break is over! Our popular brandy chocolates are available now for sale. In close co-operation with a first-class chocolatier from Innsbruck (Austria) we offer four different kinds: Wild raspberry, orange, Wachau apricot and Williams pear. Our fruity brandies combined with the exquisite Jivara Lactee or the dark Guanaja Grand Cru chocolate from Valrhona offer a fine and unique chocolate-brandy-specialty. The 2011 harvests: The first assessment
Great harvests of our most important varieties – this is the theme of the 2011 summer. The harvests of our Wachau apricots, the Williams pears and the Gravenstein apples showed and outstanding quality. Never before did we harvest so many apricots in so little time: almost 40 tonnes in four days only! We worked until after midnight to process the fruits to mash, and we were proven right. The weather conditions worsened later and we were forced to abort the harvest – but by then the finest fruits were already fermenting in our vats. The early harvests of our Morello cherries and the Black Currant berries at the beginning of July went according to plan. What a great start to our harvest season! The Gravenstein apples and the Williams pears benefited from a very sunny and warm August and September. So did the quinces and Rowan berries – the harvest of these fruits is planned for the end of October. In contrast, the Wild Raspberry, the Wild Plum and the Black Elderberry have fallen short of our quality criteria. Unfortunately, we had to cancel these harvests. But we keep our hopes high for the 2012 season!
